Tree Removal in Full Swing Around Worcester Burncoat Area

Worcester the heart of Massachusetts has fallen victim to an infestation of the Asian Longhorn Beetle. It seems that this critter made its way into the US as a stow away in wooden packaging materials. It lives and breeds inside of certain types of trees and wood products.

We began to catch wind of this in the Burncoat area of Worcester about a year ago when we received a flyer detailing that certain areas of the city were infested. Those areas were then instructed to follow strict disposal of tree limbs and debris from trees in infested areas. Rather quickly, a pretty large area of Worcester and some surrounding suburbs had been quarantined, meaning no debris from the tress in the area bigger than one square inch could leave the quarantined area and had to be handled by certified tree removal teams.

We did not hear anything with regards to this problem for quite some time, until one Saturday morning, where a suspicious character was getting suited up in “climbing” gear (harness the whole works) and was climbing the trees in our front yards. I found this rather odd, as this doesn’t happen every day. (If it does in your area, I would love to hear about it! :) )

After asking the man the simple question of what on earth he was doing, he informed me that he worked for the USDA and was inspecting trees for infestation.

Sure enough our area became infested and as you can see from the picture I posted above, all of the trees in our area will be removed.  They started in our end of the street early this morning, and to be honest made quick work of cutting them down.

The unfortunate part of all this is I believe it will take away a large part of the character and appeal this particular neighborhood had. The Burncoat area has always been a very scenic neighborhood with older style homes and the large trees. According to the city, eventual a “reforrestation” process will be worked in and trees less susceptible to the beetle infestation will be re-introduced.

I surely hope the city follows through with this to restore a large part of the scenery around these parts.

If you are interested in finding out more about this, you can read about it here from the Worcester city home page on the infestation.

If you are reading this and from around an area that is also affected by this, feel free to drop a comment on this post!

 Pioneer Square

Well it has been a very long day two, but another wonderful day in the Pacific Northwest city of Portland! We started off the day early in the morning by driving and parking in the downtown area and visiting pioneer square (pictured above).

After spending a couple of minutes around the square we walked into the local area  & travel information center which was located right in Pioneer Square. We were planning on visiting both the Japanese Gardens as well as the Rose Garden and were looking for directions via public transportation on getting there. Sure enough, everybody at the center was really helpful, gave us great suggestions and off to “The Max” we were, to catch a ride to the gardens.

The Max

The Max as it is called here in Portland is the “Light Rail” public transportation service. There is also the Portland streetcar service which is a smaller light rail system, but the Max covers a much larger area and has different lines in the system serving different areas of Portland.  One thing I noticed about this particular system is that unlike other public light rail systems it doesn’t interfere as much with the scenery downtown. No big rail tracks to walk over, no ugly boarding platforms. I think this system is one of the most thoughtfully planned out systems I have seen. Most importantly, it is VERY clean! Actually I can say this about the entire city, VERY CLEAN! The city is immaculately kept and maintained.

 Zen Garden

We arrived at the Japanese garden, and the photo opportunities were incredible. As far as today goes, I shot over 300 photos! The Forecast for today was rain throughout, however it wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t the best weather for photos, the sky to me looks horrible (overcast), so I avoided including it in my photos where I could. The rain picked up when we got to the Japanese gardens but wasn’t extremely heavy. So as you will notice in most of my outdoor photos from today, most everything is wet!

The Japanese and Rose Gardens we visited were very well kept, and I enjoyed them very much. Very interesting, as we spent a good amount of time there. I would recommend them both to anybody visiting the Portland Area!

 Mother's Bistro & Bar

Now on to the great food which is an understatement! The restaurants in Portland are some of the best I have been to! Mother’s Bistro and Bar, where we ate lunch today, is no exception. The food at Mother’s to be completely honest is perfect. I really don’t know what else they could do to the menu items to make them any better. I had the crab cake sandwitch with pasta salad, and the wife had the macaroni and cheese. I had the chance to taste the macaroni and cheese and WOW! The pasta was cooked just right and the cheese was just perfect. I would really ask that if you come to Portland and you have a meal you go to Mother’s it has great atomsphere and the food is just amazing! One other little interesting tidbit about Mother’s is that while we were sitting and eating, we noticed one of the cooks coming into the restaurant with a bag filled with fresh bread, which we assumed was picked up from a bakery near by. So we know we were getting pretty fresh stuff eating there.

Since we are talking about food, one thing my wife pointed out is that in Portland aside from the Starbucks practically on every block (we aren’t complaining by the way) there really are more smaller restaurants and brewerys than fast food chains or even national restaurant chains. I think this is great! The better chance for folks in Portland to get a good home cooked meal, they can’t really get anywhere else!

Well folks, that’s all for today. Don’t forget to check my Flickrstream and vacation photo set for more photos as I post them. I took so many today I don’t have time to process them all tonight, so I am sure I will be going through them for weeks to come!

Tomorrow it is off to follow the Columbia River and see Mt. Hood! I hope to get plenty more photos then too. Who knows maybe I will have another 300 shot day! I sure hope so.

Honda Has Guts!

On my list of favorite car manufacturers, Honda is a top candidate. On my list of car manufacturers that are innovators first and car sales companies second, I consider Honda first and well ahead of the competition!

Case in point, the Honda FCX Clarity!

The FCX is the first production Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle on the market. That’s right you too can lease this vehicle from Honda Motor Company TODAY! Check the link for more information and some very good pictures and demos.

I give Honda a lot of respect for being the first manufacturer to get a hydrogen car into production that anyone (at least in the areas in California for now) can walk into a dealership and drive away with.

Another interesting part of Honda’s hydrogen story is a fueling station for the home to fill the FCX with hydrogen as well as use any left over energy from the hydrogen generating process to heat water in your home and provide the home with electricity! More info here. Not only are honda engineers trying to tackle environmentally friendly problems in transportation but they are also using the opportunity to solve other environmental “un-friendly” energy sources in our daily lives.

It will only get better from here, and any alternative that will reduce our need to run a car on un-leaded gasoline is fine by me!

Cars are definitely not at the top of my list of interests and hobbies like Photography and Computers, but I do still find an interest in the technology cars include these days and do enjoy a well built and great handling car.

Over at autoblog.com I read an interesting article linked here.

It looks like BMW is rumored to be contemplating bringing back the Isetta! For those of you who may not know about this classic car, it was the vehicle “Urkel” (the geek everybody fell in love with on the sitcom “Family Matters”) drove. It had 3 wheels (some models of Isetta had 4) and the one door to the car opened where the engine compartment should be.

I tend to like sporty cars with great handling characteristics which of course the Isetta is NOT. But, what I found interesting in this rumor is the reasoning behind this possiblilty in the first place.

BMW’s current lineup of cars contains some of the best, if not THE best handling and built cars on the road today. They are all based on V6 (or larger) powerplants. I consider all of these cars to be VERY efficient given the amount of performance they place in the drivers hands. However, when compared with other competing manufacturers, BMW’s average fuel efficiency statistics across model families do not compete well with these competitors who use more efficient 4 cylinder engines in most of their cars.

This is where Isetta may help BMW. More importantly, with the rising sale of smaller more efficient cars, like the Nissan Versa, and Honda Fit, the Isetta may not be such a bad idea.

Will I buy one if they do decide to sell these? Absolutely not….. but BMW better make this the “Ultimate Compact Driving Machine”.
