Just in case you haven’t heard already by the time you read this, and you actually care and follow rumors. The latest is that the rumored “EOS 50D” has shown up on the official chinese Canon website. The link is down now however, as I am sure canon didn’t mean to do this. So for all you gadget followers out there, Bob Atkins Photography where he has more of the details.
I am still eagerly awaiting more news on the rumored 5D follow on, as I really would like my next SLR to be full-frame, but you guys already know that! =)
For those readers keeping up with my blog, you have seen some of the shots I took while traveling in the Pacific Northwest. I decided to rent a lens to take with me to compliment my 18-55mm Rebel XT kit lens. I wanted something that would give me some range, and also wanted to try something that I might be interested in purchasing later on. In fact, that is a perfect reason to rent a lens, you get to try something out for a couple of days before you decide to plunk the money down for expensive glass.
At first I was looking at a couple of places to rent my glass from, but decided on lensprotogo.com for a couple of reasons. The first and most important reason to me was the service. It was extraordinary. I had made a decision on either the Canon f/2.8L IS 70-200mm or the Canon f/4L IS 24-105mm. When talking to Paul at lensprotogo.com I had asked him what I was looking for a lens for, and what I currently owned in my collection. He was very helpful and brought up a lot of points that I didn’t even really think of.
I ended up renting the Canon f/4L IS 70-200mm. The reason? It is much, much lighter than the Canon f/2.8L version of the same lens, and is actually still a pretty sharp lens. I have heard some say it is the sharpest lens in Canon’s L-series collection, but I am sure that is debatable. Bottom line, Paul was rather helpful and I could tell he also enjoyed photography and had some real good insight that helped me make the perfect decision for my trip. We also decided that going with the 24-105mm lens was a slight overlap with what I currently had in the 18-55mm and that I might like the further extension the 200mm focal length would get me. Like it I did. In fact I had no problem with the 200mm focal length at the top end, it was great. I did however find some frustration in 70mm being the widest that lens would go and I constantly found myself switching back to my kit lens for some of my shots. So the 70-200mm wasn’t quite the lens that I could have on the camera and leave it on there for everything, but the shots I took with that lens were visibly better, sharper, and wonderful characteristics overall.
All in all, I am happy I gave Paul at lensprotogo a call as he was very helpful and accomodating and really took the time to find out what I needed and what would suit my situation best. If you are looking to rent some glass for your Canon or Nikon I would recommend giving the lensprotogo.com website a visit and contacting Paul if you have any questions and are confused about which glass will suit your needs. Tell him that the “Phat Photographer” sent ya.
Well Folks! It sure has been a while. First of all let me apologize to all my readers for being completely boring lately and not posting at a rate anything near the schedule I had hoped to post when starting the blog. To be completely honest, my day job has just been rather hectic lately and I haven’t really put in a lot of time in creating new content for the Blog.
I am hoping this will change and I hope to start today!
I am currently writing this post from my hotel room in Portland OR where my Wife and I are vacationing and checking out this gorgeous area!
As you can see from the photo above, this is Mt. Hood. I took this picture on the final approach for landing into Portland’s airport on our way in. The great introductory fly-by tour was complements of Southwest Airlines. I think it has been a wonderful first day, and we are here for several more days so more pictures and posts to follow.
My mission is when I am back from vacation to keep up with a more regular and frequent posting schedule. I don’t necessarily see my day job getting any easier or less time consuming, but I feel I need to make time for the readers and have been “dropping the ball” on that recently.
Anyways, back to this vacation and the photography goodness to follow. I am in a photographer’s heaven here! So many things to take pictures of, and the scenery and beautiful features of the area are amazing! This holds true for both the urban settings as well as the more nature/wilderness settings.
For you photographic equipment geeks out there, I was able to rent a Canon 70-200 f/4L IS USM lens from my good friends at Lensprotogo. So far all I have to say is, WOW! I have been shooting for one day with this thing and it is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to see what comes out of this lens on the rest of this trip! I also am still carrying my kit lens (18-55mm) for some wide angle shots, but I keep wanting to go back to the sharpness and quality that I am seeing when shooting with the 70-200. I will have more about my rental experience with lensprotogo.com in a future post, but I believe it is worth every cent I paid for it and the people at lensprotogo were great. They took the time to answer all my questions, and really helped me pick the perfect lens for this trip!
So how can you keep up with all the photos and such coming out of the Pacific Northwest from your’s truely over the next few days? Well check out this blog of course, as well as the following links to my other photos on Flickr:
It looks like the folks at Samsung have been put together a secret task force last year to begin investigating a professional level DSLR. According to this Amateur Photographer magazine article the sensor is still in the design stage and a release date is uncertain.
I currently use a DSLR with an APS-C sized sensor and have always dreamed of getting only EF lenses in anticipation of upgrading to a 5D-ish camera in the future. I am wondering however, if the DSLR future has both of these sensor sizes, what else other than wide angle shots does the 35mm sensor buy you, besides more pixels of course. Either way, I still want to upgrade eventually. =)
Looks like Canon is looking to lure more compact camera users to DSLRs. I for one think this is great! The more DSLR users the merrier! Some highlights I am still parsing through (as I just am reading about it now) are features such as a 12.2 CMOS APS-C size sensor, a 3.0″ Liveview LCD, a new DiGiC III image processor (including a feature to bring out detail from highlights), and an image-stabilized kit lens. Here are some links to more details, including a blog entry by Stephen Shankland with some initial pricing info.
