Follow My Lead To Solid Ground

Cars are definitely not at the top of my list of interests and hobbies like Photography and Computers, but I do still find an interest in the technology cars include these days and do enjoy a well built and great handling car.

Over at autoblog.com I read an interesting article linked here.

It looks like BMW is rumored to be contemplating bringing back the Isetta! For those of you who may not know about this classic car, it was the vehicle “Urkel” (the geek everybody fell in love with on the sitcom “Family Matters”) drove. It had 3 wheels (some models of Isetta had 4) and the one door to the car opened where the engine compartment should be.

I tend to like sporty cars with great handling characteristics which of course the Isetta is NOT. But, what I found interesting in this rumor is the reasoning behind this possiblilty in the first place.

BMW’s current lineup of cars contains some of the best, if not THE best handling and built cars on the road today. They are all based on V6 (or larger) powerplants. I consider all of these cars to be VERY efficient given the amount of performance they place in the drivers hands. However, when compared with other competing manufacturers, BMW’s average fuel efficiency statistics across model families do not compete well with these competitors who use more efficient 4 cylinder engines in most of their cars.

This is where Isetta may help BMW. More importantly, with the rising sale of smaller more efficient cars, like the Nissan Versa, and Honda Fit, the Isetta may not be such a bad idea.

Will I buy one if they do decide to sell these? Absolutely not….. but BMW better make this the “Ultimate Compact Driving Machine”.
